You got this. We are here to help.
There are many reasons to self represent in litigation. Perhaps you are a professional with excellent negotiation and presentation skills. Maybe you’ve done this before, and understand the process. But in most cases, you are here because you simply cannot afford a lawyer.
Unfortunately, in Alberta, access to justice has become a problem for the middle class. The poor can qualify for legal aid, and have access to many social programs for which the middle class cannot qualify. The rich have the funds to retain legal counsel, paying upwards of $400 per hour in many cases. If you are middle class you may be too wealthy to qualify for legal aid but too poor to afford thousands of dollars on legal fees. If this isn’t enough, the billable hour approach leaves the tab open ended, and family law matters can often become a financial bottomless pit.
